A whole board.
A lifetime ahead.

Annual growth rings and bark in a cut of oak
Oak, in cross-section. Every year leaves a line.

Before we make the first cut, we wait three years.

Belgian river-valley oak rests under our shed roof on the Korenlei. We choose a single 48 mm board for each seat. No glued-up strips. The grain runs all the way through. We fire the drying kiln and cut just one batch a month.

A name underneath.

The month. The forest. Its place in a batch of 24. Hot-iron branded into the seat, beside our three-ankle wedge mark.

Sonian or Ardennes oak. Always traceable.

Six weeks.
No shortcuts.

Turned, adzed and wedged by hand.
No screws. No metal. Just a joint
that holds more firmly with time.

THROUGH-WEDGED FOXTAIL TENONS

Three legs, splayed at 11°.
The wedges lock each one into the seat.

  1. WEEK 01

    Read the timber.

We select the plank and check its moisture. Under 9%, or it waits a little longer.

    Oak · below 9% moisture
  2. WEEK 02

    Turn three legs.

Each tapered leg is turned by hand, then set at an 11° splay. Three feet find their level.

    Three legs · 11° splay
  3. WEEK 03

    Follow the grain.

A hand adze dishes the solid seat. The shallow hollow is felt before it is seen.

One board · 48 mm thick
  4. WEEK 04

    Let the wood hold.

Foxtail tenons pass through the seat and open with hand-driven wedges. There is no metal to hide.

    Through-wedged · no screws
  5. WEEK 05

    Give it a surface.

Soap, ammonia fuming, or linseed oil and beeswax. Then time to cure, without hurrying the timber.

Three finishes · cured by hand
  6. WEEK 06

    Mark its beginning.

We brand the underside with its month, lot and forest origin. Then it leaves Korenlei 14 by barge or courier.

Two brothers.
One address.

In 1987, we opened a small woodworking workshop beside the Leie. We have been making De Drievoet here ever since.

One batch a month. Twenty-four stools. Enough to keep our hands busy, and our attention where it belongs.
